Warrensburg Central School District leaders have worked continuously to bring hands-on learning opportunities to students, preparing them for whatever career and education they’re looking for after graduation. As part of this priority, the district is partnering with WSWHE BOCES to bring an Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) program to students in the area. This one-year program will be offered at the Warrensburg Jr./Sr. High School during the 2024-25 school year.
The program will be open to 11th and 12th graders who want to pursue a career as an EMT in the future. To enroll, students must turn 17 by May 2025, when the certification exam will be offered. Students who successfully complete the program and certification exams will receive certification as an Emergency Medical Technician from the New York State Department of Health.
“We are excited to be a part of the plan that expands our CTE offerings in the medical field. We encourage our older students to set goals to prepare themselves for a successful and impactful future. Giving our students access to hands-on learning opportunities is the best way that we can let them experience a field before graduation,” said Warrensburg CSD Superintendent Amy Langworthy.
Participants will get to learn about the roles of EMTs and be trained to perform tasks in crisis situations. Students will learn how to respond to 911 calls, assess conditions rapidly, and administer life-saving interventions including CPR, bleeding control, and medication administration. The courses will cover the topics of patient assessment, general pharmacology, airway management, shock and resuscitation, medical assessment, traumatic injuries, EMS operations and incident management, and medical, legal, and ethical issues
The program has been modeled off the standards Common Career and Technical Core as well as NYS requirements for EMT-B certification. Interested Warrensburg students should reach out to their school counselor for more information.
