An Unbe-leaf-able Elective

While many Warrensburg Central School District students were sitting at desks this past semester, diligently taking notes as their teacher spoke, Coach Teresa Colvin’s Outdoor Adventure class was probably somewhere in the great outdoors—geocaching, backpacking, or maybe learning how to build a lifesaving lean-to.
Thanks to the Glens Falls Hospital for funding the curriculum and supplies, students in grades 9-12 were able to learn a variety of skills to keep them safe when adventuring in the grand but wild Adirondacks.
Throughout the semester, students learned new skills and put them into practice in the real and raw outdoors. Units included orienteering, camping and camp cooking, fishing, boater safety, and emergency shelter building—skills that can truly make a difference when you’re far away from civilization. They also learned how to tie on tackle and enjoyed fishing at Echo Lake in the fall and ice fishing on Schroon River to close out the semester.
Next year, Colvin is excited to turn this experimental one semester elective into a full year course open to juniors and seniors. Students can expect rugged learning in real time—a true Adirondack experience!
